Joyful Help Meet At Home

Embracing Her Ministry: Husband, Children, Home

As a plus size Christian woman who desires to not only dress modestly, but  be feminine and pretty for her spouse, I have found that the simplest solution is sewing my own jumpers.  Not only do they look better and last longer, but in the long run they save me lots of money.

There are a number of times when my dear husband took me to the mall and said buy a new dress.  Much to our dismay, they were too small, ugly, of poor quality and expensive.  On the few occasions that the big "W" would have something in my size, it  was ugly or gawdy, and of poor workmanship.  As difficult as it is to accept being pleasantly plump, shopping for clothes was a horrible experience I dreaded.  Often I was forced to purchase something I didn't particulary like or want simply because it fit!

So after years of putting my sewing on hold, I have fallen in love with sewing anew.  As I sew each seam I am grateful for all those along the way who taught me how.  Without them I 'd be, well, less clothed :)  than I am now.  To all my teachers, starting with
my precious Mom,  I offer you  heartfelt "Thank You".
If I had a hard time finding pretty dresses and jumpers, other ladies in my size/shape category probably do too. After thinking and praying about this, I believe the LORD is leading us to begin a sewing business.
4 different styles-
Gathered empire waist,
straight jumper (no slit),
drop waist-good for the nursing mom because the armholes are long, and the overall style jumper.

Jumper Apron

This is a good way to recycle jumpers  that are too small or too short.

First you'll need a jumper. One that is too tight will work fine, because we're going to "let it out".  The jumper should be of a sturdy and absorbent fabric, but any jumper will do.

~~To make the apron~~

Match the side seams to each other in the same manner as match the legs seams when you fold a pair of trousers.  Now lay it on a table or the floor.  The side seams should be facing up, and you should have a fold at the front and back of the jumper.

Next, using a yardstick, measure 5 inches (or more) from the BACK fold.  Draw a line all the way down the back. Now cut on this line.  You should have one strip of fabric the length of your jumper. SAVE this strip because this is what we are going to use to make the ties for your apron.

Now, TRY IT ON.  If it feels too snug, or bulky, fold it like we did in the beginning a snip a few more inches off.  Be careful not to cut too much because we will be turning the raw edges under next.

Once you have it "fitted", fold under the raw edges and press.  Fold and press again, and stitch in place.

~~To make the apron ties~~

Measure you waist and ADD 5 inches.   Using the strip you cut from the back of the jumper, cut a 5 in. wide strip as long as your waist measurement + 5 in. If you waist measure 24in., then your strip should measure 29 x 5. Cut this strip in half, leaving yourself 2 strips 14.5 x 5inches long.

These can be finished in one of two ways~~
A.) With right sides together, fold each in half lengthwise.  Sew the long sides and one end shut.  Turn right side out, and press.
B.)  Turn under all raw edges TWICE, press, stitch in place.
Voila'  Your ties are finished.

~~Attaching the Ties~~

You're almost done. At the waist of your apron back, pin one tie to each side, making sure you hide any unfinished ends. Make sure you sew it so that when you are finished any seams will be inside. STOP.  TRY ON your apron. Tie it to see if they are too long and adjust accordingly.  When you are comfortable and happy with the fit, stitch the ties in place.

CONGRATULATIONS!  Your Apron is complete.

~~Embellishments~~

Now for the fun part...feminizing it...sew lace, or ruffles, on the hem, around the neck and arm holes.  Iron on some hearts or butterflies..be creative...maybe just a few patches, or pockets...let the creativity fly.  You can also use patches to cover up any stains, or holes now or later on. Just use something that is a little bit worn looking.  Save some scraps from worn out skirts, or dresses or other sewing scraps.

Enjoy your new apron.
